Before
your shorkie baby comes home make a 'safe puppy space' . Whether you live in a
house with a yard or in an apartment, your puppy should have a
space that is safe and just for her. I like to use a play pen or
an exercise pen, you can get a great exercise pen on ebay for
around $50.00. Make sure you get one that has a door. Most the
time you don't need a very tall one, only about 24 in. We keep
all their supplies in the exercise pen including food, water,
toys, bed and create.
Your new shorkie puppy should have a safe place to go if she is scared or scolded. Beds, baskets, and especially crates make an ideal place for puppy. She should have dog toys of her own all over to dissuade her from things that are not. She should have a special place where her toys are kept so she knows which are hers.
Make sure your shorkie's home environment is safe. If you can, get down on
puppies level and crawl around looking for hazards. It is amazing
how the view differs from down there! Look for electrical cords,
small balls and toys that pose a choking hazard. Make sure all
cleaning products are put well away. She should have no access
to medications or cleaning supplies of any type.
Shorkie puppies should have access at all times to fresh water
and fresh food. Food will turn rancid and
could make her sick if she eats it once it has spoiled. Left
over food will also attract unwanted house guest. So make sure
you change your babies food often. Once your shorkie baby
gets bigger it is ok to set up feeding times for them. Bowls
should be kept clean daily and should be a height appropriate
for your puppy’s size.
